Is Supporting Your Adult Kids Putting Your Retirement At Risk?

From our Podcast#39 Live Plan Invest with Senior Wealth Advisor Frani Feit, recorded Monday, July 7, 2025.

For many successful families, supporting adult children financially has become the norm, funding rent, travel, career gaps, or even full lifestyles well into their 30s or 40s. At first, it feels generous. Eventually, it can feel unsustainable—or worse, enabling.

Clients often ask us, “How do we pull back without damaging the relationship?” The answer: thoughtfully, gradually, and with purpose. Here’s how.

1. Start with Purpose, Not Punishment
This isn’t about cutting them off — it’s about preparing them to stand on their own. Frame the shift as an act of love, not rejection.
“We’ve supported you to give you a head start. Now it’s time to help you build your own foundation.”
As your wealth advisor, we can help you create a family mission statement that emphasizes independence, responsibility, and legacy, making this transition a family value, not a personal judgment.

2. Replace Entitlement with Education
Too often, adult children aren’t financially reckless — they’re financially unprepared. Equip them with the tools they need: how to budget, build credit, invest, and live within their means. Better yet, normalize open money conversations as part of growing up.
Our team can offer financial coaching sessions or host a family education meeting to help shift the conversation from dependence to empowerment.

3. Taper Support Gradually
Going cold turkey rarely works. Instead, consider a structured wind-down. If you’ve been covering rent, you might:
• Cover 50% this year
• Cover 25% next year
• Step away entirely by year three
We can help you map out a support tapering plan — with realistic timelines, financial projections, and accountability markers for both sides.

4. Communicate with Compassion and Clarity
This is an emotional process. Adult children may feel rejected. Parents often feel guilt. But clear communication reduces drama.
One script to consider:
“We’ve loved being able to help, but continuing at this level prevents us from fulfilling other important goals – like our retirement security, charitable giving, or treating all our children fairly.”
We often facilitate or support these conversations, acting as a neutral, trusted third party in what can be a delicate dialogue.

5. Use Trusts with Purpose-Built Guardrails
For families with significant wealth, structured trusts can provide a way to continue support, but with responsibility baked in.
Options include:
• Incentive trusts that match employment income
• Delayed or phased distributions tied to age, achievement, or life milestones
• “Freedom-with-responsibility” trust clauses
We work closely with estate attorneys to design trust strategies that balance generosity with long-term accountability.

6. Redefine Roles for Both Parent and Child
Parents often wrestle with shifting from “provider” to “mentor.” Children must build their own identity outside of the family balance sheet. This emotional transition can be as hard as the financial one.
Our role goes beyond dollars and documents. We help families think through these dynamics as part of a broader multigenerational plan.

Final Thought

If you’ve been generously supporting adult children, it’s not a failure — it’s love in action. But at some point, love also means letting go. Not abruptly, not coldly — but with wisdom, planning, and support.
The ultimate gift is not just money — it’s helping your children build the confidence and capability to thrive on their own.
