An Underutilized Strategy for High-Income Earners

When it comes to retirement planning, there’s one strategy I believe is massively underutilized, and I want to make sure it’s on your radar. It’s called the Mega Backdoor Roth Conversion, and it has the potential to create a tax-free retirement bucket that could even extend to the next generation. In my opinion, this is one of the best-kept secrets on Wall Street.
Many high-income earners assume they’re ineligible to contribute much, if anything, to a Roth IRA—and they’re not wrong. In 2025, if your income exceeds $165,000 as an individual or $246,000 as a married couple, direct Roth IRA contributions are off the table.
That’s where the Mega Backdoor Roth Conversion comes into play. This strategy allows you to make after-tax contributions to your 401(k), bypassing income restrictions, and subsequently convert those dollars to Roth, maximizing your tax-free savings. The problem? If you’re like most people, you likely haven’t even heard of it.
What Is the Mega Backdoor Roth?
Most people assume the maximum amount they can contribute to their 401(k) is the well-known standard contribution limit of $23,500 (plus a $7,500 catch-up contribution if you’re over 50). This applies to money deducted from your paycheck on a pre-tax or Roth basis.
However, what many don’t realize is that the total 401(k) contribution limit—including pre-tax contributions, Roth contributions, employer matches, and after-tax contributions—is actually $69,000 (or $76,500 for those 50 or older) in 2025. After maximizing your standard contributions, the Mega Backdoor Roth lets you fill the remaining space with after-tax dollars, which can then be converted to Roth funds.
This is especially valuable for high-income earners who have already maxed out their standard 401(k) contributions but still have the capacity to save more.
Here’s an analogy: Think of your 401(k) as a suitcase for retirement savings. You pack all the essentials—clothes, toiletries, and shoes (your standard pre-tax, Roth, and employer contributions). If you still have space left, you can pack additional items like accessories (your after-tax contributions that can ultimately be converted to Roth). These extras complete the Mega Backdoor Roth strategy, allowing you to fully utilize the available room in your suitcase.
**Quick Note** You may be wondering about the difference between after-tax and Roth contributions. The key distinction is that Roth contributions grow and are withdrawn tax-free regardless of capital gains. In contrast, after-tax contributions will eventually incur capital gains taxes on any earnings above your cost basis.
Why Is This Strategy So Attractive?
The biggest advantage of this strategy? Unlike traditional pre-tax contributions, Roth funds grow and can be withdrawn tax-free in retirement. They also aren’t subject to Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), giving you more control over your retirement income.
Additionally, if you don’t need to tap into these funds, they can be passed on to heirs tax-free. This is an especially valuable feature if your beneficiaries are high-income earners themselves. Instead of facing income tax rates of 32%, 35%, or even 37%, they’ll inherit a tax-free bucket of money.
Why Isn’t Everyone Doing This?
Despite its benefits, several barriers prevent people from taking advantage of the Mega Backdoor Roth:
• It requires multiple steps. You must first confirm that your 401(k) plan allows after-tax contributions, then set them up, and finally, complete the conversion to Roth. Many people hear about this process and think, “I’d rather just save the money in a taxable brokerage account.” While that’s an option, it could mean paying 15-20% (or more) in capital gains taxes unnecessarily.
• Not all 401(k) plans offer this feature. Only about 22% of 401(k) plans allow after-tax contributions, and only 9% of eligible participants take advantage of it. If your plan doesn’t support it, this strategy isn’t an option—so checking with your plan administrator is crucial.
• Maxing out standard 401(k) contributions is already a stretch for many. Adding after-tax contributions on top of that can feel unrealistic, especially for those managing mortgages, college tuition, or other major expenses.
The Bottom Line
The Mega Backdoor Roth requires effort, but the benefits are undeniable. It allows you to maximize your savings, grow your wealth tax-free, and create flexibility in retirement. For those who don’t need to access these funds, it’s also a powerful estate planning tool for passing wealth to the next generation in a tax-efficient way. What a great gift to leave your children, right?
